Lovely Interior. What Am I Supposed to Do Here?

*Sideways, retail, and the distance between saving a picture and making the trip.*

Some interiors make you want to take a photograph. Then go somewhere you can sit down properly.

This matters. At some point, the person stops being a figure added to an architectural render for scale. They acquire a coat, a bag, an appetite, a companion and a desire to hear what that companion is saying. The space somehow has to accommodate this unexpected outbreak of life.

That’s why we like bringing Sideways into conversations about retail design. The roads, wineries and conversations over dinner add up to an experience we want to join. We imagine spending time there. Where we would stop, what we would try, who we would bring. The place gets a part in our own story.

For a bakery, restaurant or shop, that’s a more interesting ambition than making it into someone’s reference folder. What would bring a person here, specifically? What would they want to do again? Which moment would they tell their friends about without prompting from your social media manager?

Imagine a bakery where you can watch the bread come out of the oven. You can linger, take in the smell and choose a loaf while it’s still warm. The scene already has a product, something happening and a reason to stay. Design can help it work: give people a clear view, think through how they move, make room to wait. A vase is allowed too. But the bread shouldn’t have to fight it for attention.

A place tells its story through the details of being there. How you were welcomed. What you got to taste. Whether you could see the products properly. Whether you wanted another ten minutes in your seat. Writing “your happy place” on the wall does not excuse an unhappy chair.

We believe good retail design starts with curiosity about these ordinary things. They give the materials, lighting and layout a purpose. A space acquires character through the life it makes possible.

Saving a beautiful picture takes a second. Visiting takes time, money and the actual physical act of leaving the house. We’re interested in creating places that give people enough reasons to make the effort.
